Shares of Levi Strauss surged 18% on Thursday after the retailer raised its full-year profit guidance and posted holiday earnings that beat expectations. Late Wednesday, Levi's announced its fiscal first quarter earnings and said it expects adjusted earnings per share for fiscal 2024 to be between $1.17 and $1.27, up from a previous range of $1.15 to $1.25. As part of the project, Levi's cut about 12% of its global workforce. It also exited its Denizen business, which comes at a lower margin, and has relied less on aggressive discounting to drive sales. It's also seeing record amounts of sales happening online and through its own shops instead of through department stores like Macy's and Kohl's , which come at a lower margin.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years. Republicans, too, overtook unenrolled voters two years later. As of last month, a tally of active voters indicated there were 343,488 Democratic voters, 279,936 Republican voters and 273,298 unenrolled voters. The economist served in the Maine Senate as an independent, and remains active on political issues.

Stephanie Keith | Getty ImagesDemocrats aren't just breathing a sigh of relief after flipping a red seat blue in New York's special election — they're taking notes. On the same day as the special election in New York, House Republicans voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Republicans backing Pilip, who was born in Ethiopia and served in the Israel Defense Forces, worked hard to make the special election a referendum on immigration. Special election, special circumstancesDespite Murphy's warning, many political watchers are quick to note that the New York special election is far from a perfect bellwether for the general election. New York Republican Chair Ed Cox in a statement Tuesday night blamed "the specific circumstances that brought about this special election" for Pilip's loss.

As 2024 kicks off, the creator economy is having an identity crisis. "The venture-scale generational companies are, yes, creator companies, but they're also typically fitting into another bucket." Why the creator economy has been 'disappointing'Once pitched as a rocket-ship opportunity, service companies in the creator economy that focus on products for influencers haven't delivered, investors and industry professionals told BI. Although the phrase already existed, the world needed a new way to describe this prospering industry, and thus, the term "creator economy" entered the mainstream. Lia Haberman, an influencer marketing expert and instructor at UCLA Extension, described influencer marketing as separate from the services arm of the creator industry that has faltered.

REUTERS/Vincent Alban Acquire Licensing RightsNov 25 (Reuters) - Mastercard (MA.N) Spendingpulse said on Saturday that U.S. retail sales on Black Friday rose 2.5% year-over-year excluding automotive sales, not adjusted for inflation. In September, Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures in-store and online retail sales across all forms of payment, said it anticipated U.S. retail sales, excluding automotive, to grow 3.7% during the holiday season, running from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24. Black Friday refers to the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, when retail sales are traditionally strong. E-commerce sales on Friday increased by 8.5% year-over-year as consumers shopped for deals online, while in-store sales increased by 1.1%, MasterCard Spendingpulse said. Black Friday's spending spike reflects a consumer who is more willing to spend than in 2022, when gas and food prices were painfully high. Pandya noted that impulse purchases may have played a role in the Black Friday growth since $5.3 billion of the online sales came from mobile shopping. A Mastercard analysis of this year's Black Friday sales found that in-store sales rose just over 1% versus online sales, which grew by over 8% compared to last year. Black Friday kept the momentum going from the day before on Thanksgiving when online sales totaled $5.6 billion, according to a prior Adobe analysis. The report forecasts that online shoppers will spend roughly $10 billion over the course of Saturday and Sunday, and a record $12 billion on Cyber Monday.

CNN —An Iowa woman whose husband ran for Congress and lost the GOP primary in 2020 was convicted by a federal jury Tuesday of a voter fraud scheme during the primary and general elections. Her husband, Jeremy Taylor, lost the Republican primary in Iowa for the US House in 2020 but was elected as the Woodbury County supervisor in a general election that year. Prosecutors say Kim Taylor visited households in the Vietnamese community, encouraging residents to fill out voter registration forms and absentee ballot request forms. Kim Taylor “submitted or caused others to submit dozens of voter registrations, absentee ballot request forms, and absentee ballots containing false information,” the Justice Department said in a statement. She also “completed and signed voter forms without voters’ permission and told others that they could sign on behalf of relatives who were not present,” the DOJ said.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The wife of a northwestern Iowa county supervisor was convicted Tuesday of a scheme to stuff the ballot box in her husband’s unsuccessful race for a Republican nomination to run for Congress in 2020. Woodbury County election officials became aware of possible voter fraud in September 2020, when two Iowa State University students from Sioux City requested absentee ballots, only to learn ballots had already been cast in their name. When processing absentee ballots on election night, election workers notified Gill that the handwriting on a number of them appeared to be similar. Most voter fraud cases involve one voter casting a single ballot in another person’s name, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Evans, who helped prosecute Taylor’s case. “Despite what’s in the media, voter fraud is extremely rare,” Evans said.
